The
Heart
The heart is situated in the thorax. Its
connecting fu organ is the small intestine. The functions of
the heart are :
1. It pumps out blood through the blood vessels at the
tissue and organs carrying nutrient to nourish the tissue and
organs for the proper functioning of the tissue and organs
2. It governs the mental activities
and physiological function of the brain. The heart dominates
all Spirit, consciousness, memory, sleep and thinking.

3. The essence of the heart comes to the tongue, and this
energy can be seen in the face. A pink face shows proper circulation
of the qi, a red face indicates the qi is too active and a pale
face indicates a lack of qi of the heart.
4. Excessive joy will affect the heart.
5. The colour red is related to the heart.
6. The taste is bitter. |

The
Liver
The liver is situated at the
right hypochondriac region. Its connecting fu organ is the gall
bladder. The functions of the liver are :
1. It regulates the blood flow to the tissues and organs
and also influences menstruation. During rest, part of the blood
remains in the liver, while during activity, blood is released
and this release of blood is controlled b the liver.
2. Prolonged anger weakens the qi of the liver so that the
liver will not function properly leading to headache, fainting
spells and even vomiting of blood. On the other hand a dysfunction
of the liver leads to constant anger.
3. The liver promotes the function of the spleen and stomach
in digestion and absorption. It affects the secretion of bile
and excretion into the intestine. |

4. When there is sufficient qi in
the liver the liver the tendons are strong and extension and
flexion are free.
5. The liver controls the eyes and the growth of the nail.
6. Anger will affect the liver.
7. The colour green is related to the liver.
8. The taste is sour.

The
Spleen
The spleen is situated at the left hypochondriac region. Its
communicating fu organ is the stomach. The functions of the
spleen are :
1. It is responsible for the digestion and absorption
of food and carrying its essential substances to the heart
and lung where they are sent to nourish the whole body.
2. The spleen governs the blood circulating within
the blood vessels to prevent abnormal bleeding.
3. The spleen qi ascends and as such sends the nutrient
tot he lung to transform into blood and qi. In the process
of transforming and transporting. It enables the muscles to
receive the nutrients from the food.

4. The spleen opens at the mouth, and if the spleen
function is normal the appetite is good, the lips will be
red and lustrous.
5. Worry will affect the spleen.
6. The colour yellow is related to the spleen.
7. The taste is sweet.

The
Lung
The lung is situated in the thorax. Its connecting fu organ
is the large intestine. The functions of the lung are :
1. The lung dominates the qi of the entire body and controls
respiration. It inhales clean qi to supply the body's function
and exhales waste qi.
2. During the process of inhalation and exhalation, the
lung regulates the water passages. Body fluid are excreted
through the skin as sweat and body fluid excreted through
the kidney as urine.
3. It disperses the essential of food to the body surface
and thus it dominates the skin and hair of the extremities
and trunk giving lustre to the skin. Regulating the opening
and closing of the pores and giving gloss to the hair.

4. The descending function of the lung sends the body
fluid to the kidney and onto the urinary bladder to be excreted
as urine
5. The lung opens into the nose. If the lung function
is normal, the hair on the limbs and body will be lustrous.
6. Sorrow will affect the lung.
7. The colour white is related to the lung.
8. The taste is pungent.
